How To Wash Makeup Sponges | EGO SHOES

There’s nothing more exhausting than washing your beauty sponge. Like honestly we’d rather rub £40 foundation in with our fingers than wash a sponge, but we’ve been told enough times that it needs to be done so this is how it’s done properly. For those with sensitive skin or those prone breakouts, washing your makeup sponge is a must to prevent irritation and the spread of bacteria.

Beautyblenders

Method 1 – Soap and Water

Possibly the most fuss-free of the methods. Regardless of if you use a liquid cleanser or a bar cleanser you can really get your hands in there and scrub that sponge. A word of warning about this method, the soap can dry out your sponge and shorten its lifespan, but I think we’d rather take that than rubbing a germy sponge all over our faces everyday

step 1: Get that sponge wet – submerge the sponge until it doubles in size

step 2: Work the soap in – Dishsoap works wonders to break down makeup or you can buy a special cleanser. Really work it in with your fingers or if you’re using a bar soap rub the sponge directly on the bar.

step 3: Rinse – Rinse it ou under running water unti the water runs clean. Leave to dry in a well-circulated place (you could actually create more bacteria if you dry it in your zipped up makeup bag!)

Method 2 – Soak Your Sponge

If you’ve got a little more time on your hands and you want to remove any of those deep-rooted stains this is the way to go.

step 1: Squirt a few drops of cleanser into a bowl of warm water. Submerge that dirty sponge. If you’re worried about bacteria you can boil some water and use that. Just make sure you mind your fingers!

step 2: Leave your sponge to soak for a few minutes and the makeup should start breaking down.

step 3: Give your sponge a good few squeezes to wash out the makeup (please don’t do this straight away if you used boiling water, we’ve been there, we’ve got the scars). Give it a good scrub with your fingers especially the spots that need more love and leave to air dry.

Method 3 – The Microwave Method

Don’t just assume you can chuck your beauty sponge into the microwave and you’ll have a microbe-free sponge. The likelihood is you’ll end up with a mess and possibly a small fire (hey at least the germs won’t thrive on the beauty blender if its a pile of ash).

step 1: Make a soapy water mixture and soak your sponge. You can use dish soap or cleansing solution here, baby shampoo works too.

step 2: Fully submerge the sponge in the mixture in a microwavable bowl/cup and pop it in the microwave.

step 3: After a minute, remove it from the microwave and wait for it to cool before wringing out your blender. Your sponge should be transformed instantly, without so much as lifting a finger.
